Ahmaud Arbery murder trial jury selection to begin Monday

Jury selection is due to begin in a Georgia courtroom Monday in the murder trial of three white men accused of running down and killing black jogger Ahmaud Arbery.

The Glynn County court has summoned 1,000 potential jurors for the highly publicized and racially charged trial stemming from Arbery’s Feb. 23, 2020, shooting death, WRDW-TV said.

Glynn County Superior Court Clerk Ronald Adams has ordered 600 of the potential panel members to report on Monday, with another 400 to remain on standby to ensure an impartial jury can be seated, the outlet said.

The caught-on-video shooting was among the high-profile cases that sparked massive protests and Black Lives Matter demonstrations during a tumultuous 2020 — including the police-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis that May.

Arbery, 25, was out for a run when prosecutors said Gregory McMichael and his son, Travis McMichael, chased him and tried to corner him with their pickup truck.

William “Roddie” Bryan, a local resident, jumped into his truck and joined the chase, striking Arbery with the vehicle at one point before Travis McMichael allegedly shot him dead with a shotgun.

The McMichaels claim they fired in self-defense.

Bryan’s cellphone video of the chase and eventual fatal shooting went viral.

All three men were indicted on state murder charges in the case last year and hit with a federal hate crimes indictment earlier this year.

The case also prompted the state to overhaul Georgia’s citizens’ arrest law.
