Anthony Fauci mocked for pulling out of White House Correspondents' Dinner

A Johns Hopkins professor took a public swipe at Dr. Anthony Fauci for refusing to attend the upcoming White House Correspondents’ Dinner this weekend — despite his being vaccinated four times.

“Dr. Fauci has been vaccinated four times and he still says he’s not comfortable going to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner this Saturday night,” Dr Marty Makary, a Fox News medical contributor, told Tucker Carlson on his show Wednesday night.

“That is the person that is behind all the COVID policies in the United States.”

The jibe came after President Biden’s chief medical adviser declared Tuesday that the US was “out of the pandemic phase” of COVID-19,” only to walk back his comment the very next day.

Fauci, 81, earlier this week decided to pull out of the annual black-tie event celebrating the press, citing his personal coronavirus concerns, even though he is fully vaccinated against the disease and has received two additional booster shots.

As CNN first reported, Fauci had been invited to attend the gala as a guest of ABC News and had planned on going, but he later had a change of heart.

President Biden, 79, is expected to be present at the dinner organized by the White House Correspondents’ Association Saturday, with The Daily Show host Trevor Noah serving as the entertainer for the evening.

Appearing on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” Markary, a surgeon and public policy expert at Johns Hopkins Hospital, attempted to poke holes in Fauci’s credibility by pointing out that he had completed a rheumatology fellowship, not an infectious disease fellowship.

“Dr. Fauci is allowed to have an opinion. I think he has experience and should weigh in but let’s be honest — he is not an infectious diseases doctor,” Markary sneered.

Rheumatology is the study of diseases that affect the muscles, bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons.

Although Fauci got his start in that area of medicine, since 1984 he has served as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Since the start of the pandemic, Fauci has been pilloried for promoting sometimes contradictory guidelines concerning mask-wearing and other COVID-related policies involving booster shots and travel precautions.

Speaking to Judy Woodruff of “PBS NewsHour” Tuesday night, Fauci pronounced: “We are certainly, right now, in this country out of the pandemic phase. Namely, we don’t have 900,000 new infections a day and tens and tens and tens of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands of deaths. We are at a low level right now.

The comments come days after Fauci decided to pull out of the White House Correspondents Dinner.

“So, if you’re saying, are we out of the pandemic phase in this country, we are,” he added, while still cautioning that “we’re not going to eradicate this virus.”

The very next day, however, Fauci did a sharp U-turn on his previous comments, which have made headlines around the world.

“We are in a different moment of the pandemic,” Fauci told the Associated Press Wednesday. The US has “decelerated and transitioned into more of a controlled phase” after a winter surge, he added.

“By no means does that mean the pandemic is over,” Fauci stressed.

He further hammered his revised message home in an interview on CBS News, stressing that “we certainly can’t say the pandemic is over. It is not over.”

Markary argued that Fauci “has been using the wrong data the entire pandemic.” He also accused the presidential advisor of favoring “political propaganda over rigorous scientific studies.”

The US is currently experiencing a mini COVID surge driven by the highly infectious BA 2 subvariant of the coronavirus.

Even with this latest uptick, COVID-19 cases are at a lower point than they have been in months and two-thirds of the US population is vaccinated.

In Washington DC earlier this month, dozens of lawmakers, journalists and Biden Administration officials contracted COVID after attending the annual Gridiron Dinner, where Fauci was among the guests.
