They’re harnessed up and once again clip-clopping across the Brooklyn Bridge on their way to pay tribute to the fallen.
Budweiser released an updated version of its iconic “Respect” commercial ahead of the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
The original, which aired during the 2002 Super Bowl, featured the brand’s historic team of Clydesdale horses pulling a red Budweiser wagon through the wintery countryside to a cobblestoned street in Lower Manhattan. The horses then crossed the Brooklyn Bridge, somehow arriving at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, where the team bowed toward a Lower Manhattan with a gaping void in the skyline.
Geographic challenges aside, the 60-second ad touched the hearts of millions for its ability to transcend commercialism and capture the still-broken heart of the nation.
It was considered among the best Super Bowl ads of all time, yet aired only once until it was played again on the 10th anniversary of the attacks.
The new version uses some of the original footage, including the cobblestoned trek through Downtown and the famous scene of the horses crossing the Brooklyn Bridge.

New Yorkers may remember that shooting the scene via helicopter in 2001 required special permission from Congress and then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
The additions in the update come at the beginning and end of the minute-long clip, when the Clydesdales are getting hooked to their harnesses and crossing green fields, and when they reach Liberty State Park. It’s a summery scene as they bow again toward Lower Manhattan, this time with the void of the World Trade Center filled, and the “Tribute in Light” reaching skyward.
“Twenty years later, we’ll never forget,” appears on the screen as solemn music plays.
The Budweiser logo appears at the end, along with that of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and the Never Forget Fund.
The ad will reportedly play today during Saturday’s Air Force-Navy football game, which will air on CBS, and again tonight during the second installment of the Yankees-Mets Subway Series on Fox.
