Burlington Coat Factory shooting in L.A. leaves two dead, including suspect

A 14-year-old girl was struck and killed by a stray bullet when police opened fire on a suspected gunman –  who was also killed – at a Burlington Coat Factory in the North Hollywood section of Los Angeles on Thursday.

The teenager was in a dressing room when police gunfire intended for a reportedly armed suspect penetrated a dressing room wall, LAPD confirmed.

Around 11:45 a.m. local time LAPD officers responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon. They received another call en route to the store reporting an active shooter, LAPD Captain Stacy Spell said at a press conference on Thursday. The callers told cops they had sheltered in place.

When officers arrived, they began searching for the suspect whom they located attacking another person before they opened fire.

“While conducting that search for the suspect, the officers encountered an individual who was in the process of assaulting another, and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Spell said.

The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed that the suspect and another individual were found dead at the scene, Spell said.

It was not clear how many officers were involved or how many shots were fired.

Neither the suspect nor the victim’s identities have been released.

A woman with moderate-to-severe injuries was also transported to a local hospital, officials said. It was not clear if she had been shot.

“We’re at the very preliminary stages of this investigation. There’s still a lot of surveillance video to review, there are witnesses to interview,” he said, adding that more information would be released when it is available.
