California Highway Patrol officer shot on San Diego highway

A California Highway Patrol officer was shot while investigating an accident on a San Diego freeway Wednesday evening, a report said.

The unidentified eight-year CHP veteran had responded to a collision on I-8 around 6:15 p.m. when he became “involved in a struggle with a pedestrian resulting in a single gunshot,” CPH Captain Michael Harris said at a press conference streamed by KGTV.

The officer was shot in his right thigh and was in serious but stable condition, officials said.

The suspected gunman was arrested with help from bystanders, according to CHP.

“There were some Good Samaritans on scene and they did assist in subduing the suspect and we are very very grateful for that,” Harris said.

It was “yet to be determined” if the cop fired his weapon, according to Harris.

“We’re all very hopeful that he may see a full and swift recovery,” the captain said of his injured officer.
