A Texas man has been sentenced to two life sentences after he admitted to killing his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend by ramming his pickup truck filled with propane tanks into their RV trailer — after she told him she was pregnant.
David Joshua Reed, 41, pleaded guilty on Friday to murdering his ex-girlfriend Shelby Duarte, 23, and 43-year-old Timothy Nelson in Lindale, south-east of Dallas, in December, the Tyler Morning Telegraph reports.
He carried out the twisted attack after Duarte had told him she was pregnant with his child but she was not leaving her new boyfriend, according to police.
Reed had loaded the front seat of his pickup truck with propane tanks because he believed he could blow himself up in the process.
He told investigators he then drove at a high speed and crashed into the RV where Duarte and Nelson were living.
The two victims were thrown more than 65 feet from the trailer, police said.
Just before he crashed into the RV, Reed left a voicemail on Duarte’s phone saying: “You reap what you sow. I will see you in hell.”
Reed survived the crash and was arrested nearby with the keys to his pickup truck in his pocket, according to authorities.
His changed his plea to guilty before his murder trial was scheduled to start on Monday.
During the sentencing hearing, Duarte’s brother was nearly escorted from the court after screaming during his victim impact statement that Reed should have been given the death penalty.
”David, you’re a coward and you don’t deserve a plea bargain. You deserve everything that is coming to you,” Joseph Eisenhower said.
“I can’t say what I want, but the hole you put in our family; you’re worthless and evil. In these 30 years you got, there’s nothing I can say but I pray you don’t make it out of those walls.”
