Derek Chauvin pleads guilty to federal charges in George Floyd case

Former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin pleaded guilty Wednesday to violating George Floyd’s civil rights.

Chauvin, 45, who is already serving a 22-year-sentence after being convicted of murder in Floyd’s death in April, initially pleaded not guilty to the federal charge brought against him in May.

He changed his plea in a Minnesota courtroom on Wednesday, KARE-TV said in a report.

The federal charge accuses Chauvin of violating Floyd’s rights when he pressed his knee into the 46-year-old black man’s neck during a botched arrest in Minneapolis, killing him.

The May 2020 caught-on-video incident drew worldwide attention and sparked massive Black Lives Matters protests denouncing police brutality and calling for racial justice.

In a statement Wednesday, Floyd family attorney Ben Crump credited the public outcry for helping convict the ex-cop of murder and, now, “landmark civil rights charges.”

“While in many ways today is a victory for the interest of justice, we will never forget it cost George Floyd as a son, a brother, and a father — a father who, as Gianna Floyd put it, ‘changed the world,’” the statement said.

“We must do this for George, to ensure that this one life and shocking death will change the future for countless others,” Crump added.

Prosecutors will ask US District Judge Paul Magnusson for a 25-year prison sentence, to run concurrently with his state sentence.

Four other former Minneapolis police officers are now awaiting trial in Floyd’s death.
