Family IDs Wongel Estifanos as child killed on Colorado thrill ride

The young girl who fell 110 feet to her death while riding a Colorado amusement attraction ride was identified by her family on Wednesday.

Wongel Estifanos, 6, died after apparently being ejected from the Haunted Mine Drop ride in Glenwood Springs while on vacation with her family on Sunday, according to a fundraising website to raise funeral expenses.

“Wongel was a beautiful, caring, and cheerful girl who loves Jesus so much for a 6 year old girl. Her life was cut short in this tragic accident,” loved ones wrote.

The site had raised about half of it’s $50,000 goal in one day.

Details of the accident investigation have not been released, but a 911 operator said Wongel fell 110 to her death while on the vertical drop ride, which does intentionally not feature shoulder harnesses, according to The Denver Post.

The mine drop ride plunges down a mine shaft in about 2.5 seconds, and park goers are required to sign a liability waiver before disembarking.

A seat belt is “in no way a guarantee of safety” and a rider can still be injured by “forces that exceed the limits of protection provided by a seat belt,” the wavier reads.

The park is closed until Sept 11, officials wrote on its website.

“On the evening of September 5th a fatality occurred at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park. An investigation is ongoing,” the website read.

“We are deeply saddened and ask that you please keep the family of the deceased in your thoughts and prayers.”
