FBI releases new footage of Capitol Hill pipe-bomb suspect

The FBI on Wednesday released new surveillance footage of the would-be pipe bomber sitting on a bench outside the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington, DC the night before the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Shortly after the moments captured in video, the would-be terrorist placed a bomb in the area where he was sitting, the FBI said.

The same night, the suspect also planted a pipe bomb in an alley behind the Republican National Committee Headquarters on Capitol Hill, authorities said.

The bombs were found the next day before they detonated, but law enforcement authorities have said they believe the bombs were viable — and could have exploded at the downtown buildings.

Since January, the FBI has worked frantically to catch the suspect — conducting over 800 interviews, collecting more than 23,000 video files and assessing over 300 tips.

But with the suspect still on the lam eight months later, the agency has renewed its call for the public’s help solving the case.

“We know it is hard to report information about a friend or family member, but these pipe bombs were viable devices that could have detonated, causing innocent bystanders to be seriously injured or killed,” the agency said in a Wednesday statement.

“Your tip could be the one that prevents this person from harming themselves or anyone else.”
