A Brooklyn man who was captured on video spraying police officers with mace at the Jan. 6 Capitol riot was busted last week — thanks to tipsters on Reddit.
Sleuths on the social media site helped cops identify Edward Rodriguez, who allegedly sprayed officers as they were securing a barricade on a terrace of the Capitol, according to charging documents against him unsealed Friday.
Video of the assault, which showed Rodriguez, 26, wearing a black suit and carrying a “stop the steal” sign, was posted to Reddit — and users started referring to the Brooklynite as the “#suitmacer” online, according to the complaint against him.
They eventually identified the suspect as Rodriguez, and tipsters sent a number of materials to the FBI, including Rodriguez’s driver’s license photo, police mug shots and a screenshot of his former real estate profile, the documents state.
Rodriguez was arrested Friday and charged with a number of federal crimes, inlcuding disorderly conduct in a Capitol building and assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers.
Federal authorities have charged more than 500 people in the Capitol riot, which led to the deaths of five people.
Throngs of former President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol building that day in an effort to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
