Florida councilman, a COVID doubter, hospitalized with the virus

A Florida councilman who cast doubt on the COVID-19 pandemic has been hospitalized with the virus, a report said.

Volusia County Councilman Fred Lowry has been sick for about two weeks and was admitted to the hospital on Monday night, Councilwoman Billie Wheeler told The Daytona Beach News-Journal.

“He’s pretty darned sick,” Wheeler said.

Lowry, a 66-year-old Republican serving his second term, received monoclonal antibody treatment last Friday, according to Wheeler.

County Chair Jeff Brower said Tuesday that Lowry had pneumonia a few years ago. “So his lungs were already pretty beat,” said Brower.

Lowry faced calls to resign in June after he preached conspiracy theories discrediting COVID-19 and promoting QAnon beliefs during a sermon at Deltona Lakes Baptist Church, according to another report in The News-Journal.

“We did not have a pandemic, folks,” Lowry said in the sermon. “We were lied to.”

The councilman displayed debunked data about COVID-19 death tolls that was circulating online to support his claim, the report said.

Lowry also referred to Dr. Anthony Fauci as “Dr. Falsey.”

“I did not mispronounce that. That’s the way I wanted to say it,” he said during the sermon.
