Fort Valley State University student shot at residence hall

A Fort Valley State University student was shot at a residence hall forcing the campus to go on lockdown Wednesday night, officials said.

Campus police at the Georgia college responded to a single gunshot fired shortly before 7 p.m. inside a residence hall, according to Fort Valley State University.

The unidentified victim was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was described as alert.

A cause for the shooting remains unknown, as police are trying to determine whether the student was shot by a suspect or the shooting was self-inflicted, according to the Peach County Sheriff’s Office.

Fort Valley State University ended the lockdown shortly after 10 p.m., but more security officers remained prevalent on campus.
