A German schoolteacher allegedly murdered then ate his lover to satisfy cannibalistic sexual desires after the two men met on a dating website.
The 41-year-old suspect – a math and chemistry teacher identified only as Stefan R. under German privacy laws – faced trial Tuesday on accusations he lured Stefan Trogisch, 44, to his apartment in the Berlin suburb of Pankow, the Telegraph reported.
He then allegedly murdered the electrical worker, cut up his body with a saw, ate part of the corpse and hid the remains throughout the city, according to prosecutors.
“The accused killed the victim because he sought sexual satisfaction through the killing and wanted to eat parts of the corpse,” the prosecution alleged on the first day of the trial.
Stefan, who hid his face from cameras with a file, said through his defense attorney that he planned to say nothing “for the moment.” There are no pleas in the German legal system.
The victim’s parents and brother were present in court as the indictment was read out against the suspect.
Trogisch vanished on Sept. 6 after taking a cab to the suburb of northern Berlin. The last person to see him alive was the driver, who dropped him off near Stefan’s apartment, according to the Telegraph.
“They want to know what happened to their son,” a lawyer for the family said. “They don’t expect Stefan R to justify himself or try to apologize. It is not excusable.”
Several weeks later, body parts were discovered in the area, including a torso and thigh bone.
Police used canines to lead them to Stefan’s home, where they found a saw, an empty freezer with traces of blood and sodium hydroxide, a chemical that can be used to dissolve remains, the paper reported.
Stefan allegedly made multiple Google searches for terms related to cannibalism and was involved in online “cannibal forums.”
Lawyers for the victim’s family allege that Stefan used the name “Masterbutcher79” online, a possible reference to Armin Meiwes, a computer repairman who was known as the “Master Butcher of Rotenburg.”
Meiwes — who was dubbed the “Cannibal of Rotenburg” by German media — is serving a life sentence after he castrated, killed and ate a man he met online. A video filmed by the killer appeared to show that he had the victim’s consent.
The German press have named Stefan the “Cannibal of Pankow,” but there is no indication that Trogisch consented to his killing.
Tuesday’s hearing was adjourned after the defense team claimed it had not been provided access to prosecution evidence on car-sharing vehicles Stefan allegedly used to hide the remains.
