Terry McAuliffe danced like nobody was watching at a rally Tuesday night — but many were and they reacted afterward.
McAuliffe, who is in the fight of his political life, suddenly neck and neck with Republican Glenn Youngkin in the Virginia governor’s race, threw his hands into the air and swayed to Ben Rector’s “Drive” while on stage in Arlington with President Biden in a cringe-worthy video clip that soon went viral.
McAuliffe, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, wearing a gray suit and light-blue shirt without a tie, was the only one dancing on the stage.
“I’m the worst dancer ever, which is why I don’t dance in public. Terry McAuliffe too should stop dancing in public,” Meghan McCain remarked on Twitter, linking to a video posted by Jake Schneider, a member of the Republican National Committee’s rapid response team.
In his tweet, Schneider called McAuliffe’s moves, “Cringe, part infinity.”
“The Terry McAuliffe dance truly took on a life of its own tonight,” said Kayleigh McEnany, the press secretary for former President Donald Trump and a Fox News host.
It’s not the first time McCauliffe got down and boogied during a political rally.
McAuliffe posted a video of himself dancing at a campaign event in June before Virginia’s Democratic primary election with state legislators Louise Lucas and Lionell Sprulli.
“I heard folks wanted more dancing,” he wrote in the tweet.
Just last week McAuliffe broke out in dance to “Drive” at the conclusion of a rally in Dumfries with Vice President Kamala Harris, although his moves weren’t as enthusiastic as those Tuesday night.
Then two days later he was rocking out to the song, a staple at his rallies, after former President Barack Obama spoke at a rally in Richmond.
He told CNN he apologized to his staff for breaking the “cardinal rule” after dancing during a 2016 rally in Virginia for Tim Kaine, who was the running mate of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
McCauliffe, who served as governor between 2014 and 2018, is locked in a dead heat with his Republican challenger Glenn Youngkin.
The election is Tuesday.
