Hero Uvalde teacher Irma Garcia, heartbroken husband are laid to rest

UVALDE, Texas — A joint funeral was held in Uvalde, Texas, on Wednesday for the hero teacher gunned down in last week’s mass school shooting and her grief-stricken husband who died of a heart attack in the days after the massacre.

The caskets carrying the bodies of Irma and Joe Garcia were adorned with matching white flowers as they were carried into the Sacred Heart Catholic Church ahead of the service.

Teary mourners could be seen embracing each other outside the church before making their way inside for the private funeral.

The couple, who were married 24 years, are survived by their four children — two daughters and two sons.

The couple had met in high school and their relationship “flourished into a love that was beautiful and kind,” according to their joint obituary.

Irma, 48, was one of two teachers killed alongside 19 students when the gunman stormed Robb Elementary School last Tuesday.

Two days later, her husband died of a heart attack that family said was brought on by the grief of his loss.

Joe Garcia, husband of mass shooting vicitm Irma Garcia, is seen in a Facebook photo. Garcia died of a broken heart days after his wife, a teacher at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde Texas was murdered.
