Jennifer Siebel Newsom tells critics to 'get a life' over husband's canceled plans

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom has taken himself off the public radar in recent weeks, leading his wife to defend him in a now-deleted Twitter post.

“It’s funny how certain folks can’t handle truth,” Jennifer Siebel Newsom tweeted Sunday night. “When someone cancels something, maybe they’re just in the office working; maybe in their free time they’re at home with their family, at their kids’ sports matches, or dining out with their wife. Please stop hating and get a life.”

Newsom, who survived an attempt to recall him from office in September, recently canceled plans to attend the ongoing United Nations Climate Change Conference in Scotland due to “family obligations.”

Sacramento Bee politics reporter Sophia Bollag pointed out Siebel Newsom’s tweet, noting that the governor’s office has declined to say which “obligations” caused Newsom to cancel his trip.

Newsom’s Oct. 29 announcement that he’d be pulling out of the climate summit was followed by an assurance from spokesperson Erin Mellon that the governor would participate in the gathering virtually. The summit has been in session since Oct. 31 and will conclude on Nov. 12 with no sign of Newsom showing his virtual face.

California Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, who defended Newsom’s decision to hang back to The Associated Press, stepped in for him at the Glasgow event, tweeting Friday that she felt “energized and hopeful” after leaving the summit.

“It was an honor to lead CA’s delegation & share our success as a global leader in climate action with our international & state partners, tribal nations & the private sector,” she tweeted.

According to Fox News, Newsom made his last public appearance Oct. 27 after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.

The AP reported Friday that the governor’s office did not respond to inquiries regarding Newsom’s whereabouts.
