Lindsay McGeorge initially called the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Saturday evening and reported three people lurking suspiciously near his home.
One of them, McGeorge told police, had a handgun.
But deputies found nothing out of the ordinary after responding to the home and left.
McGeorge later shot his son, Jaiden McGeorge, 19, at the residence and told investigators that he mistook him for an intruder, officials said.
No charges have been filed in the case but a probe is continuing, deputies said.
The sheriff’s office is asking for anyone with additional information to come forward.
