Mitt Romney says Donald Trump will get 2024 GOP prez nomination

If former President Donald Trump decides to run for president again in 2024, Sen. Mitt Romney believes he will win the Republican nomination.

“I don’t delude myself into thinking I have a big swath of the Republican Party,” the Utah Republican told Politico on Thursday.

“It’s hard to imagine anything that would derail his support. So if he wants to become the nominee in ‘24, I think he’s very likely to achieve that.”

Romney would be expected to not support Trump as the Republican nominee for the next presidential election — as the senator voted to impeach the 45th president twice while he was in office. He also did not vote for Trump in the 2020 presidential election.

Trump has held frequent weekend rallies over the last few months, though he has yet to announce whether he will run for president again. Trump is expected to reveal his decision following the 2022 midterm elections.

Several other Republicans and Trump allies, such as Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), have voiced their support for a Trump nomination, citing his influence on the GOP.

“He’s the leader of the party, that’s clear … If he decides to run, he will be the nominee,” Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) told Politico.

Even if the nomination is a lock for the former president, there are many within the party who would rather see a different face vying for the White House.

“We won’t win back the White House by nominating Donald Trump or a cheap impersonation of him,” Republican Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said during a speech at the Ronald Reagan Library this week.

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.”

Former Attorney General Bill Barr has agreed with that sentiment, telling NBC’s “Today” show last month, “I certainly have made it clear, I don’t think he should be our nominee and I’m going to, you know, support somebody else for the nomination.”

Still, Barr indicated that he would support Trump if he won the Republican bid.

“Because I believe that the greatest threat to the country is the progressive agenda being pushed by the Democratic Party, it’s inconceivable to me that I wouldn’t vote for the Republican nominee.”
