Most Americans say now is a bad time to lift Title 42: poll

More than half of Americans disagree with plans by the Biden administration to lift a Trump-era immigration regulation that allows migrants to be turned away directly at the southern border and prevented from seeking asylum in the United States, a new poll found.

The survey from CNN-SSRS found 57% of respondents opposed to lifting Title 42, while just 43% of those interviewed said it was time to return to pre-pandemic immigration protocols.

The Biden administration announced last month plans to end the policy on May 23, a decision which has faced severe opposition from Republicans.

Respondents who said it was not the right time to lift Title 42 were split among themselves, with 29% saying they want it to remain indefinitely, while 27% said the government just requires more time to unwind the program.

Only 26% of respondents said they had confidence in President Biden to handle any influx of new illegal migrants who might arrive if Title 42 ends.

(L-R) Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX), Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) and Rep. Jesus 'Chuy' Garcia (D-IL) hold a news conference on Title 42 outside the U.S. Capitol on April 28, 2022 in Washington, DC. The members of the House Progressive Caucus expressed their support for the Biden Administration to end Title 42, a Trump-era policy that halted migrants from crossing the U.S.-Mexico border due to the health emergency posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
