Nancy Pelosi will run for Congress again, defying retirement rumors

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced Tuesday that she will seek another term in Congress, ending months of speculation within the Democratic caucus over whether she would run again.

The 81-year-old revealed her plan in a video posted to Twitter, in which she said that “much more needs to be done to improve people’s lives.”

“Our democracy is at risk because of the assaults on the truth, the assault on the US Capitol and the state-by-state assault on voting rights,” she said in the video. “This election is crucial. Nothing less is at stake than our democracy. But as we say, we don’t agonize, we organize and that is why I am running for reelection to Congress and respectfully seek your support. I’d be greatly honored by it and grateful for it. Thank you so much.”

Pelosi was first elected to Congress in 1987 and has been the top House Democrat since 2003. In 2007, she became the first woman to hold the Speaker’s gavel. After Democrats were soundly beaten in the 2010 midterm elections, Pelosi spent eight years as the minority leader before becoming Speaker again in 2019.

Retirement rumors began to swirl around Pelosi in recent years, and she agreed to limit her tenure as House speaker after a group of Democrats called for new leadership in 2018.

This is a developing story.
