New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu won't run for Senate

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu shocked the GOP Tuesday by announcing that he will not run for US Senate next year.

Washington Republicans had courted Sununu to challenge Democrat Sen. Maggie Hassan, his predecessor as governor, in 2022. Instead, Sununu told reporters in Concord that he would seek a fourth two-year term as the Granite State’s chief executive.

“My responsibility is not to the gridlock and politics of Washington, it’s for the citizens of New Hampshire,” he stated. “And I’d rather push myself 120 miles per hour delivering wins for New Hampshire than to slow down, end up on Capitol Hill debating partisan politics without results.”

Sununu, the son of former White House chief of staff John H. Sununu and the younger brother of former Sen. John E. Sununu, did not rule out holding federal office or even running for president at some point. He added that he’d also be open to serving in another Republican president’s Cabinet.

“We have a lot more to do to protect the interests of New Hampshire citizens and it’s just clear that I can most effective doing that here in the corner office in the Granite State,” Chris Sununu said Tuesday.

At least two other Republicans have already entered the race to face Hassan; retired Army Brig. Gen. Donald Bolduc, who unsuccessfully sought the nomination to challenge Shaheen in 2020, and Tejasinha Sivalingam.

Sununu and Hassan were each elected to their current positions in 2016, with Sununu defeating Democrat Colin Van Ostern by 2 percentage points in a state Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump lost by less than half a point. The same year, Hassan narrowly defeated Republican incumbent Sen. Kelly Ayotte.
