North Korea launches two more cruise missiles into sea

North Korea fired two cruise missiles into the sea off its eastern coast on Tuesday, the totalitarian nation’s fifth missile launch this year, South Korea media reported.

“We still need to conduct a detailed analysis,” a Seoul military official told the Yonhap news agency. “But I want to say that should such a missile be launched southward, our detection and interception systems have no problem countering it.”

Further details of the latest launch, including where it originated and how far the missiles flew, were not immediately available.

The Hermit Kingdom fired two tactical guided missiles on Jan. 17, and launched hypersonic rockets on Jan. 5 and 11, the South Korean news agency said.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed earlier this month to boost his regime’s military this year as nuclear talks between Washington and Pyongyang have stalled since the failed 2019 summit between Kim and then-President Donald Trump.

“The increasingly unstable military environment on the Korean Peninsula and international politics have instigated calls to vigorously push forward with our national defense build-up plans without any delay,” Kim said in a speech on Jan. 1.

Last week, Kim convened a meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party to discuss possible countermeasures against “hostile” US policies that included “restarting all temporarily suspended activities,” a reference to a self-imposed moratorium on testing nuclear and long-range weapons.
