A 1-year-old girl has died in Ohio after a pit bull mauled her while she was being babysat at a relative’s home, authorities said.
Kavay Louis-Calderon was attacked by at least one of the family’s two dogs when her uncle who was watching her stepped outside Sunday morning, news station WJW-TV reported.
The uncle was arguing with a woman on the front porch of the Akron home.
“The little girl was left inside the house with the two family pets and as this disturbance, fight, was occurring outside, it’s believed that the dogs reacted and turned their aggression to this beautiful 16-month-old little girl,” Akron Police Chief Steve Mylett told the outlet.
The toddler was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.
Police said the two pooches were impounded by animal control officers at the scene.
At least one of the dogs was known to be a vicious animal as the result of an attack on a postal carrier, the outlet reported.
But authorities declined to say whether charges would be filed against the dog’s owner.
“I’m reluctant to lay blame or responsibility on anybody right now,” Myler told the outlet. “At this point, the family is mourning the loss of a 16-month-old baby. But rest assured, we’re going to get to the bottom of what happened.”
