Ohio man claims dog shot itself in the face

It was a barking mad story.

An intoxicated Ohio man accused of shooting his dog tried to claim his pooch shot itself in the face.

Jonathan George, 31, told cops the tall tale when they arrived at his Norwalk home and found the wounded animal — Lula, a 4-year-old Boxer, a report said.

She was conscious but had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

“He let them in the house, said his dog had shot itself and that he had trained the dog to bring a gun to him,” Norwalk Police Capt. Jim Fulton told TV station WJW.

“The dog has a gun in its mouth and it went off accidentally – the officers didn’t believe this story.”

George later changed his story to say the shot fired when he was unloading the gun, WJW said.

Police slapped him with misdemeanor charges of discharging a firearm while intoxicated, discharging a firearm in a municipality and animal cruelty, according to his Aug. 30 arrest report.

George’s blood alcohol content was reportedly .17 — twice the legal limit at the time of the shooting.

“You shouldn’t be drinking and handling firearms is the bottom line,” Fulton told the station.

Lula lost an eye in surgery and reportedly still has bullet fragments lodged in her head, WJW stated. The Huron County Humane Society has been raising money through donations for the dog’s $3,000 surgery and other costs.

“I don’t get it,” Daphne Nelson, a Huron County human investigator, told the station. “I’m not sure why somebody would be intoxicated and playing with a gun – that just doesn’t make sense to me.”
