Police investigating 'suspicious death' at Tesla plant

California police are investigating a “suspicious death” at Tesla’s Fremont manufacturing plant on Monday, officials said.

Fremont Fire Department personnel responded to the Tesla plant just before 3:30 p.m. local time on reports of a subject down in the parking lot, according to an alert from Fremont Police Department. Firefighters provided medical aid before declaring the subject dead at the scene, the alert added.

The death is now being investigated by the Fremont Police homicide detectives.

The incident comes on the same day Tesla’s billionaire founder and CEO Elon Musk was named Time Magazine’s man of the year.

The company’s massive, 5.3 million square foot facility in Fremont employs over 10,000 people, according to Tesla

The plant was previously owned and operated by General Motors from 1962 to 1984 and then GM and Toyota together from 1984 to 2009. Tesla plans to nearly double the plant’s size to 10 million square feet in the coming years to increase production, following approval from the City of Fremont in 2016.
