Dramatic video captured the moment passengers were instructed to evacuate a Spirit Airlines plane that had just aborted its takeoff from Atlantic City International Airport after a large bird struck one of its engines.
Fort Lauderdale-bound Flight 3044 was on its takeoff roll shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday when the right engine ingested the bird, the airline said.
“The captain braked safely and brought the plane to a stop, received an indication of damage to the engine, and ordered an evacuation in accordance with our standard procedures,” a Spirit spokesperson told the Post.
“All Guests and Team Members evacuated the aircraft and were bussed back to the terminal. We commend our crew for handling the situation swiftly and safely,” the rep added in the statement.
There was no word of any injuries sustained by passengers. There was no word of any injuries sustained by passengers.
Video posted on YouTube by Danny Adivo shows the more than 100 passengers being waved to the exits and onto inflatable evacuation slides on both sides of the plane.
The Lakewood Scoop posted footage of the passengers making their way off the stricken aircraft as foam is sprayed on the flaming engine.
The passengers were set to receive refunds, travel vouchers, and the option of traveling on another flight to Fort Lauderdale following the bird strike, the Spirit rep said.
