Vietnam sentences man to 5 years in jail for spreading COVID

A Vietnamese man was sentenced to five years in prison for breaking COVID-19 restrictions and infecting eight people with the coronavirus – including one person who died.

A court in Vietnam’s province of Ca Mau convicted 28-year-old Le Van Tri after a one-day trial, according to the country’s state media organization.

Tri was accused of breaking the country’s isolation rules and lying on an official form about his travel history, the BBC reported. He was supposed to quarantine for 21 days after he traveled from another province into Ca Mau.

Tri later tested positive for COVID, and was found to have spread it to others, the report said.

“Tri infected eight people, one of whom died due to the virus after one month of treatment,” the Vietnam News Agency stated, according to Reuters.

Vietnam has been seeing clusters of virus cases since in the last five months after aggressive restrictions largely limited the spread of COVID in the country in the early days of the pandemic.

Ca Mau has had 191 cases and two deaths since the pandemic, Reuters reported – while 260,000 cases and 10,685 deaths were reported in Ho Chi Minh City.
