An Arkansas woman left her mother’s dead body wrapped in newspaper for months while she slept in the same house and sapped her mom’s bank account, authorities said.
Geanee Pike, 54, allegedly kept mom Gloria Pike’s body in a kitchen/living room area in the room next to where she slept in a Lincoln house without running water — and filled with buckets and jugs of urine and feces, the Arkansas Democrat Gazette reported.
Gloria, who hadn’t been seen alive since August 2020, was “mummified” covered in a layer of newspapers from last year and a layer of bedding, the Gazette said.
An autopsy is pending but Geanee allegedly told police her 73-year-old mother had died of natural causes sometime at the end of 2020, according to the newspaper.
“Geanee Pike said her mother owed her money she had promised to pay from her monthly Social Security disability checks,” the Gazette said, citing a preliminary report from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
“She said she continued to use her mother’s bank account after her death.”
Geanee was arrested Sunday on charges of abuse of a corpse and financial identity fraud, according to sheriff’s office records.
Gloria was reported missing last month by her brother, who lives next door and hadn’t seen her since last summer, reports said. She had reportedly been fighting stage 4 breast cancer.
After authorities couldn’t get in touch with her at the house, they put out a post asking for information, and later interviewed Geanee, who told them her mother wasn’t missing but with an unknown friend, KNWA/KFTA stated.
Although Geanee said she didn’t have access to her mom’s bank accounts, authorities used surveillance footage to find she had used her mother’s check card at a local Dollar General in late July, the TV station said.
